Missing icons in XP

Here’s a common one. Install some new software, e.g. IE 8 in my case, and the icon is blank.
To fix this we need to rebuild the icon cache. Luckily there is a way to do this without installing any new software.
- Open display properties, by right clicking on the desktop and selecting ‘Properties’.
- Click the ‘Appearance’ tab, and select ‘Advanced’.
- Under the ‘Item’ dropdown, select ‘Icon’.
- Change the size and click ok.
- Go back and change it to the original value.
Well, that’s it. It worked for me, and I hope it works for you.
