Windows 7 RC1 x64

I’ve downloaded Windows 7 RC1 x64 to test on my Dell Vostro 1500.

First impressions are ‘DELETE THE DIFFERENT THING!’…   But when panic subsides, it’s actually quite a pleasant change from Vista.

First things first though, install a proper video and mouse driver. Go to NVidia and select Beta drivers, it works. Next DO NOT GO TO DELL, but instead go to Toshiba and seek out the Vista 64bit pad driver. This takes a bit of trial and error, to find a hardware combination that will result in the relevant link, so here is a screen shot to make things a bit easier.

Use these options to get to the 64 bit track pad driver

Be sure to select the Synaptics driver, as the Alps one is seriously deficient. My only goal here was to switch off tap click, and Synaptics was the only driver package that allowed me to do that.

Don’t expect all software to work, and don’t expect everything to run 64 bit native.

Do expect a smoother experience.
