Virtualization

VMware are giving away their ESXi hypervisor, which in essence is a software layer that you install directly to a box, allowing you to install many operating systems.

Why is this important? Because I am forever trying to build new PCs to test new ideas and environments, and I really want to stop. This latest one is based on a BE-2350, AMD’s dual core low power part, and a 690g motherboard. I’ll put in enough memory and disk, and probably install ESXi. This way I can use this box as my main work machine, DNS backup server and any other tasks I can think of.

Ok, what other benefits? Well, simply, lower power consumption, less physical space, and importantly, remote management.
