Server down

September 4th, 2008 by michael

My backup DNS server has gone down, permanently. The PSU works and yet it won’t switch on.

It’s not a power house, being a 533Mhz EPIA, but it was enough for the task. I’ll take this opportunity to upgrade, using a motherboard and CPU I had lying around, with hard disk and memory from another computer. The only thing I lack is a case, but I’ve ordered one for £23 that’ll do for the short term, and I’ll replace the PSU with an 80plus efficient one later.

Hopefully I can also take this chance to begin full server backups. Now the question is do I do a file-by-file backup of user accounts, or just take a whole disk image. They both have advantages and dis-advantages. Certainly a full disk image is better for a quick restore in the event of a disaster.

Well, fingers crossed.
