Suicide

Suicide, why do people do it. I think that there must be a genetic bias, a basic dis-connection with our surroundings that allows some people to brush with the idea more than others.

Our surroundings in this context are the people in our lives. I can think of some scenarious that would allow a person to end their own life, remembering that in a state of depression the pain of death itself is not a consideration, indead it can be a release. The scenarios:

  1. The person has nobody around him.
  2. The person may dislike all those around him.
  3. The person may care for people around him, but has decided that they do not care for him.
  4. The person cares for the people around him, and knows that they care for him, but has decided that they will eventually recover from the loss.

It’s option 4 that interests me. How hard it must be for this person, knowing the pain that they will bring, to do it. What can possibly happen in a persons life that they think that ending their own suffering is preferable to saving their loved ones from a new suffering…

To a lesser extend option 3 also. But that is often a lack of communication. That problem is easier to solve, IF it can be observed and treated in time by an interested party. But who?

Is it possible that our society is lacking some service, some facilitator. Perhaps we need a new role in society, the local do-gooder. It’s a rareity today, to find somebody that cares and wants to change the world around them one person at a time. How do we find these people, how do we help them do their good work?

If you know the answer, please comment.

In the end, suicide is painless…   In the end…  But it should be avoidable.
